GMC Acadia check engine light: OBD2 scanner with its cable resting on a pickup truck center console

GMC Acadia Check Engine Light: What Steady and Flashing Mean

8 min read  ·  by Ryan Caldwell  ·  Last updated: November 5, 2026

The GMC Acadia check engine light, also called the malfunction indicator lamp, means the vehicle has detected a fault in the engine or emission control system. Whether the light is steady or flashing tells you how fast to act.

A steady light means scan it soon, while a flashing light means stop safely. The causes, GM’s manual wording and two GM bulletins for some Acadia models come next.

What the GMC Acadia Check Engine Light Means

The GMC Acadia check engine light is the malfunction indicator lamp, and GM’s 2012 Acadia owner’s manual says a lamp that stays on while the engine runs means an OBD II problem that needs service.

Your Acadia’s computer monitors the engine, the emission system and many sensors. When a reading falls outside its limits, it turns on the light. On its own, the light does not name the part that failed, so the stored code is the next clue.

The same manual warns that continued driving can make the emission controls less effective, lower fuel economy and roughen engine running, which can lead to costly repairs. A GMC Acadia check engine light is a reason to act, not to ignore.

Steady vs Flashing: What to Do First

A steady GMC Acadia check engine light means service is needed soon, while a flashing light signals a misfire and calls for a safe stop right away.

Light What it means What to do
Steady A fault is stored and service is required, per GM’s 2007 and 2012 Acadia manuals Book a scan soon, and check the gas cap first
Flashing A misfire has been detected, per the 2007 Acadia manual Ease off, then stop safely if it keeps flashing

The 2007 GMC Acadia manual defines a flashing lamp as a misfire, and it says a misfire increases vehicle emissions and could damage the emission control system. Treat a flashing GMC Acadia check engine light as urgent.

If the light flashes, follow the manual’s sequence:

  1. Reduce speed, avoid hard acceleration and steep uphill grades, and lighten any trailer load.
  2. If the light keeps flashing, turn the key off, wait at least 10 seconds and restart the engine.
  3. If it still flashes, see a dealer or service center as soon as possible.

Car Care Kiosk’s guide for the 2017 Acadia Limited 3.6L V6 goes further. It says a blinking light is a very serious problem, so stop driving and have the vehicle towed.

GM also issued a service bulletin on misfires for one Acadia engine. The GM bulletin PIP5038B is dated June 2013 and covers the 2009 GMC Acadia with the direct-injected 3.6L V6. It also lists the 2009 Chevrolet Traverse, so Traverse owners can read the Chevy Traverse check engine light guide. It describes the service engine soon light, a misfire or a shudder on acceleration. The bulletin says a heat-stressed or damaged ignition coil may cause these symptoms, including the GMC Acadia check engine light.

The bulletin’s diagnosis lists DTCs P0300 through P0306 and P0351 through P0356, which are misfire and ignition coil codes for each cylinder. The first of these is covered in this P0304 cylinder 4 misfire code causes guide. It explains that electrical interference from one coil can damage another cylinder’s coil, so the source must be removed, not just the damaged coil replaced.

The bulletin is written for technicians. Its checks include battery cable connections, ignition coil ground bolts torqued to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft), connector seating in the under-hood electrical center, and recording every DTC and cylinder misfire before repair. Use it as a list of questions for a shop, not as a do-it-yourself guide.

Common Causes Worth Checking on an Acadia

A GMC Acadia check engine light can come from a loose gas cap, an emission-system fault, a misfire or a transmission code, so the stored code decides the next step.

  • A loose or damaged gas cap, which Car Care Kiosk says can be the cause of a steady light
  • An emission-control fault, the system both GM manuals tie the light to
  • A misfire, the condition behind a flashing light
  • A transmission control code, covered by GM bulletin 17-NA-084 in the next section

The U.S. government fuel economy maintenance guide calls a loose gas cap a minor cause, but it warns that the light can also mean a more serious issue that reduces fuel economy, increases emissions or leads to costly repairs.

Because the same light can come from a cap or a serious fault, check the cap and then read the code instead of guessing. Another GMC model’s warning is covered in GMC Terrain reduced engine power causes.

GM Bulletin 17-NA-084 and the Transmission Code P182E

GM bulletin 17-NA-084, dated March 2017, covers GMC Acadia models from 2009 to 2017 with automatic transmission, when the check engine light is set by DTC P182E.

The GM bulletin 17-NA-084 copy on NHTSA’s site says some customers see the light, and technicians may find P182E active or stored in the transmission control module. In rare cases, owners also report no PRNDL display.

The correction is written for a technician. First, verify the shift cable adjustment, the ECM park and neutral switch status in all ranges, and the internal mode switch parameters in all ranges. Then operate the vehicle to try to reproduce the code. If P182E does not reset, the bulletin says to replace the internal mode switch. If it does reset, complete the circuit and system testing steps.

The bulletin also says to ignore a U0101 code from the electronic brake control module if it appears with P182E, because that code has been found to set falsely.

GM says its bulletins are for professional technicians, and a bulletin does not mean your vehicle has the condition. Ask a GMC dealer to check your VIN before you assume it applies.

Reading the Trouble Code on Your Acadia

Reading the trouble code is the fastest way to narrow down a GMC Acadia check engine light, and the OBD-II port is where a scanner plugs in.

Car Care Kiosk’s guide for the 2017 Acadia Limited lists the steps below. Use them to gather the facts before you visit a shop.

  1. Locate the OBD-II port and plug in a scanner.
  2. Read the stored codes and write each one down.
  3. Note when the light came on, such as during acceleration, on the highway or at low speed.
  4. Clear the light only after the codes are recorded.
  5. If you do not understand the codes, have a professional diagnose the vehicle.

Clearing the light without a record can erase the clue you need. A written code, with the conditions that set it, makes the shop visit shorter and cheaper.

Will the Light Turn Off on Its Own?

A GMC Acadia check engine light can go off after a few drives if a loose gas cap caused it, but a light that keeps coming back needs a scan.

Car Care Kiosk notes that a steady light may just mean the gas cap needs tightening, and that the light may reset after a few drives. Check that the cap is tight and not cracked before you assume the fault is gone.

A GMC Acadia check engine light that returns after a reset points to a fault that is still present. A flashing light never waits for a reset. The 2007 manual treats it as a misfire, so a flashing light on an Acadia should be handled under the steps above, not left to clear itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a steady GMC Acadia check engine light an emergency?

Not an immediate emergency, but GM’s manuals say service is required, so book a scan soon. Watch for changes in performance or noises. A flashing light is different: reduce speed, avoid hard acceleration and stop safely if it keeps flashing.

Can I reset the GMC Acadia check engine light myself?

You can clear the light with a scanner after you record the codes. Clearing it does not repair the cause, and if the fault is still present the light returns. Read the code first, then decide whether a repair or a simple gas cap fix is needed.

Does a loose gas cap really turn on the GMC Acadia check engine light?

It can. Car Care Kiosk says a steady light may mean the gas cap needs tightening, and the light may reset after a few drives. The U.S. government’s fuel economy guide calls a loose cap a minor cause, but it warns the light can also point to a serious issue.

Can a transmission problem turn on the GMC Acadia check engine light?

In some cases, yes. GM bulletin 17-NA-084 says the light can come on from DTC P182E in the transmission control module on certain automatic-transmission Acadia models from 2009 to 2017. The correction includes shift cable and switch checks.

Does GM bulletin 17-NA-084 apply to my Acadia?

It applies only if your Acadia is a 2009 to 2017 model with automatic transmission and the code is P182E. GM says bulletins are written for technicians and do not mean your car has the condition. Ask a GMC dealer to check your VIN.

Do not ignore a flashing GMC Acadia check engine light. For a steady light, scan the code soon and write it down before clearing anything, because a dealer can check any GM bulletin against your VIN.
